Sadao, the hero, is a japanese doctor who finds a wounded American near his beach house. Sadao is torn between his values as a doctor that urge him to help and his loyalty to his country that doesn't allow helping an enemy. He feels he might get too attached to the American, mainly because deep down he has a good heart and also he spent a couple of years in America during his studies. Sadao doesn't want to know too much, because he hopes it will make it easier to turn the American to the police. 4. Thinking skill I chose: Inferring Sadao and Hana, his wife, are very educated and cultural people. They were exposed to the idea that different human beings can still have things in common while they studied together in the U.S. They actually first met as two "strangers" themselves, both out of home, and this experience was what made them get closer. They lived with American people and probably have some American friends too. On top of that, they also see the prisoner as a wounded man who needs help, and they are doctors who swore to help those in need. The servants on the other

2 hand, are less educated and more influenced by the government's propaganda, claiming that every American is immediately an enemy. They never left Japan and have never had the chance to know other cultures, so they are much more suspicious. PART II B. THE WAVE 10. (ii) believes in The Wave 11. (i) Because he thinks Ben needs one. 12. At the end of the experiment, Ben realizes that it had a very strong effect on his students, to the point they stopped thinking for themselves and got too carried away with The Wave movement, even when people started getting hurt. Ben's intention was to "get under the skin" of his students, but he never imagined just how much they would be influenced by it. And so, he reckoned that it did create the effect he was hoping for, but it got out of hand. 13. Ben got hurt too by The Wave. He realized although his intentions were good, people got hurt by his experiment, a Jewish boy even got beaten, and Laurie was marked as an enemy by The Wave. Ben learned a tough lesson on just how dangerous it is to play with people's lives. 14. Thinking skill I chose: Compare and Contrast Christy, Ben's wife, has the role of being the opposite of Ben. Christy reminds the reader that teaching doesn't have to be so intense and extreme. Although they are married and both of them are teachers, Christy is totally different from Ben. She is cautious, relaxed and doesn't get too emotional and obsessive for her job, unlike Ben who becomes obsessed by the fact that he couldn't come up with good answers to the questions his students asked him when he showed them the movie about the Holocaust. When comparing both characters, we see that although they have some things in common, they are worlds apart, and it emphasizes just how much Ben was veering off course when he went on with the experiment.

3 PART III 15. THE SPLIT CHERRY TREE There is a clear connection between the quote and the story. The quote reminds us just how profound a teaching experience can be, and just how strong its effect can be on one's mind and soul. In its core, the story is just about that, and we can clearly see just how mindchanging the meeting between Pa and Mr. Herbet truly is. Pa, who planned to shoot the teacher, changes his mind when he encounters Mr. Herbert and realizes that the man he saw as a dangerous enemy, is really a nice person. Mr. Herbert simply knows how to reach out to other people, and he easily finds common ground with Pa and gently guides him out of his violent way of thinking. Pa's perspective on the world and on human relations changes profoundly that day, and that's how the story reminds us of the power of teaching, and how important it is to have a good mentor in your life.
